Monday Spiritual Rumination: on waking this summer morn…

I woke this morning to birdsong and sunshine,

Rabbits trying to camouflage their desperate nibbling habits

In the tawny grass that pleads for rain.

I woke this morning, one eye at a time,

Uncovering clean sheets with my pedicured feet

and fluffing soft pillows damp with the night’s sleep.

Gently moving in the dawning day

I woke this morning to quiet and comfort and privilege,

Food and clean water and no ammunition

Destroying my person or home.

I woke this morning and wondered

What if someone else is gunned down or blown up or murdered,

Recklessly, senselessly

[is there ever a non-senseless murder?]

I woke this morning and inhaled

The sweet fragrance of peace and justice, lingering from some unknown time.

I woke this morning and exhaled a prayer

For kindness, hope,

and the courage

To live in peace.

  1. Bless your heart Nancie! You tapped into what many of us are experiencing in these days of political unrest and unable to feel safe in crowds due to multiple shootings. We must remember that at any one moment in this world there is ALWAYS more good than not good! (Quote taken from the book “Better Angels”)
